CARRYING AND ERUVIN
Rabbi Zvi Lieberman

Q & A, Session 2

May someone l’chatchila (in the first instance) keep a car key on a keyring?

No

Regarding the car key being attached to your house keys and you forget to remove it – you said that you can still carry the keys. Is this the case even if the car key contains a battery for the central locking system?

Yes. See Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchaso chap. 20 para 83 note 170

May ball be played by adults and children inside the house?

It is not prohibited according to the Rema

Can one carry your bag home from the mikveh on Friday night?

Yes

Can you bring a gift of food to your Shabbos host on Shabbos?

If it is for use on Shabbos

If someone brings a gift on Shabbos you don’t use, is this ok or should one ensure that it is used always?

One should then have in mind not to acquire it on Shabbos but only after.

Is it ok to have matzos in the house for times when you’ve been invited out or should one always buy challas?

That is a good idea and certainly acceptable

Can a child cycle his tricycle to the park on Shabbos?

Yes, so long as they only cycle on the paved areas.

Can you push a buggy with a buggy board attached?

I see no reason why not.

Can you carry a child?

With a lot of love! I understand this to be in the Eruv. Without an Eruv the situation is complex and you should address the question to your Rav.

Crossing the A41 – will the problems which exist on Yom Tov at present with carrying items which are not generally used (eg particularly medications) be alleviated by the eruv?

Yes. But even before the Eruv is up, one should ask a Halachic authority carefully, if carrying the medication eases ones observance of Yom Tov, if it is prohibited.

We learnt in last week's Shiur that one shouldn't play ball games and if we see people playing in the park we should tell them. Please may the Rabbi tell me the best way to tell someone this. Thank you.

Nicely, carefully and with sensitivity and a smile. How you would like to be told if you are doing something that is not in the spirit of Shabbos by some one you do not know?
