KEDUSHAS SHABBOS
Rabbi Roberts
Q & A, Session 2
If someone feels dizzy in the morning and they don’t feel they can daven with kavanah unless they eat something, would they be permitted to eat before davening?
Yes.
Just to confirm: if a woman has made her own kiddush in the morning and her husband has heard kiddush in shul, is it still ok to make another kiddush at home before the meal?
Yes, according to a number of poskim – this was also the personal practice of Harav Moshe Feinstein ZTL.
What is considered ‘having davened’? Shacharis or Musaf?
Shacharis.
Does ‘davenning’ on Shabbos morning mean you should say brochos, pesukei de Zimra, Shemona Esrei?
As discussed at length in the shiur, there are two main schools of thought as to what constitutes davening for women, your obligation to make Kiddush beforehand depends on your usual practice.
Would Modeh Ani or Asher Yazar be sufficient to be classified as ‘davening’?
No.
How much wine must a man have drunk to make you exempt from the kiddush?
A cheekful.
If you have wine or grape juice but prefer to drink a Chamar Medinah for kiddush Shabbos morning is this ok?
There are different customs, but essentially this is ok.
Please can you clarify: Chama Medina for Shabbos day is only if you do not have any grape juice/wine, but there is an element of choice for Havdala?
As above, there is an element of choice in both – wine is preferable, but if one personally prefers beer/whiskey, one may use them.
Is the Friday night kiddush dependant on the meal? If you know you are not eating, can ‘V’shomru’ in the davening fulfil your obligation?
You can only fulfil your Kiddush obligation ‘bmakom seuda’ if accompanied by a meal. The consensus of opinion is therefore, tat if one is not going to eat, one does not make Kiddush.
Do children have to wait for kiddush on Shabbos morning or are they allowed to eat beforehand?
Children should not be made to wait.
What, if anything, should one do about children hearing Havdalah in the summer, when they go to bed before Shabbos goes out?
One should make havdala for them on Sunday morning.
I understand that one is allowed to drink, say a coffee, before one davens in the morning. Is it permissible to eat something ‘shehakol, haeitz or haadamah’ before you daven?
A bit of Shehakol or ha’adama is ok, preferably not Ha’eitz.
