Q & A

Can one walk with heels on grass or earth?

The Gomorrah says one may not pull a heavy bench across earth if it will inevitably make grooves although one does not intend to do so. Similarly, if one is walking on earth with heels that that will inevitably make holes it is Osur.

Can you play puzzles on Shabbat?

The consensus of opinions among the Poskim is that there is no melachah - not boneh and not koseiv and therefore permitted.

Can you sweep up food on a garden patio on shabbat?

Sweeping a garden is Osur even if it is a stone ground, since the majority of gardens are earth. However, if the patio is clearly defined and the majority is not an earth floor it is permitted to sweep.

In the example of asking a non-Jew to wash your floor, is there not an issue of Chillul Hashem in asking someone - for example - to clear up your child's potty training accident?

Each case has to be judged on its merits. Often it is not a Chillul Hashem to ask a non-Jewish cleaner to do so.

Can one erect a rain cover on a buggy?

Concerning the erection of a temporary roof: If a buggy, pram etc. is already covered partially with the hood one may add to that existing roof a rain cover to cover the whole buggy since part of the Oyhel is already in existence
